Have you ever wondered how exhibits are chosen for the museum, or why photos and artifacts are arranged the way that they are? Maybe you'd like to learn more about the Low Country and why this is a tourist destination for so many people. An internship at the Morris Center is the perfect way to learn and play. In addition to learning something new you'll have the opportunity to meet and interact with people from all different walks of life. Sounds interesting? Keep reading to find out how you can become a Summer Intern for the Morris Center for Lowcountry Heritage. 

Morris Center for Lowcountry Heritage, is a non-profit organization with a goal of community engagement through educational programing and changing exhibits connected to the Lowcountry heritage. Our mission is to cultivate community experiences through education, preservation and celebration of the region’s rich history and culture, which opened on September 12, 2015. The Center advances education and engagement initiatives that preserve the Lowcountry’s history and culture through projects, events and exhibitions that inspire interest and evoke inquiry.

UNPAID summer only internship.  Internships will commence on June 12, 2017 and ends August 3 2017.  Selected Interns must be able to commit to the seven-week session.  Upon completing the internship, you'll have a recommendation letter from the Director of Programs and Exhibits, have a better understanding of the local history and how it contributes to the country and world, learned how to network and have an amazing addition to your college applications. 

Interns will assist in all aspects of Educational Programing & Exhibitions. This could include, but is not limited to:

  • Catalog large and small artifacts
  • Handle objects according to the American Alliance of Museum Standards
  • Monitoring and reporting on exhibition conditions as they pertain to exhibited collections
  • Properly store and inventory three-dimensional objects
  • Research objects for exhibits
  • Help design, develop, and set up temporary exhibits for the Morris Center
  • Provide guided tours
  • Assisting with special events and programs
  • Help to develop programs, brochures, and other publications

Applicant Requirements:

  • Must be a rising junior or senior high school student attending a school in Jasper County.
  • Must have flexible availability Tuesday- Saturday
  • Have a strong work ethic
  •  Be confident and able to work independently and as a team
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Be detail-oriented
  • Strong public speaking skills
  • Friendly, people-oriented disposition
  • General interest in history, culture and or design
  • Dress appropriately
  • Be reliable
  • Maintain confidentiality

The internship hours will typically be scheduled between: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM, Tuesday through Saturday.  Work outside those hours may be required depending upon the intern’s tasks and organizational needs. Interns will be required to work a maximum of 20 hours per week. A schedule will be arranged between the Intern and the Director of Programs and Exhibits.
